Lobster Rolls

The CT lobster roll is arguably the best in New England. No celery, no mayo, just fresh lobster bathed in hot butter.

Here’s where we find ours…

Liv’s Shack & Liv’s Dockside Grill

The drawback here is the parking lot location, but that's my ONLY beef. Get in line and order up a hot buttered lobster roll, overstuffed with fresh-from-the-shell chunks, on a buttery, toasted bun. Do NOT pass up the hand-cut truffle fries. 26 Bridge Street, Old Saybrook livsshack.com 68 Cedar Island Avenue, Clinton livsdocksidegrill.com

Liv’s Shack

Lobster Landing

Many folks around here think that Lobster Landing is the ultimate roll, and I don't disagree. A 1/4 pound of warm lobster meat tucked into a barely grilled sub roll ("imported" from Vermont), and drizzled with butter and lemon. That's it. The secret? The roll is sturdy enough, so it doesn’t fall apart before you've had a chance to savor it, and the unadorned lobster, straight from the pot, is the star. BYOB.

152 Commerce Street, Clinton facebook.com/LobsterLandingLLC

Ford’s

Mint green walls hung with black and white photographs of lobstering history, de rigueur lobster pots, plus tables full of locals chowing down on lobster grilled cheese, fish tacos, and lobster bombs (1/2 pound of lobster in a bread bowl!). We stuck with the classic 1/4 lb. lobster roll, served on a golden bun with a mountain of crispy fries and absolutely awesome slaw served alongside. Indoor & outdoor seating, plus service boat-side when it's really jamming. BYOB.

15 Riverview Avenue, Noank www.fordslobster.com

Abbott’s

Abbot's is more of a fast-food experience, though the lobster meat is fresh from the pot. Here it comes Maine style, a cone of meat on a buttered sesame seed bun, with Utz chips and slightly sweet slaw on the side. Outdoor seating on a summer day with a water view is sublime. Pick up a pint of Rhode Island broth-based clam chowder to go. In Mystic, visit Abbott’s outpost (around back) at 3 Water Street, Mystic 117 Pearl Street, Noank abbottslobster.com

Fresh Salt at Saybrook Point

On a dreary afternoon, the idea of a lobster roll in a cozy room where the river meets the sound, is just the ticket. At Fresh Salt, you can enjoy your roll outside or in, eliminating the necessity of a sunny day. Here, chunks of tender claw and tail are dipped in butter and overflow a grilled brioche bun. A basket of irresistible housemade, wisp thin potato chips, complete the experience.

Treehouse

Flanders Fish Market

What sets Flanders lobster roll apart? Its served deconstructed. Hunks of lobster are swimming in a blend of warm butter and sherry, ready to be stuffed in a toasted brioche roll. The end result remains sturdy, not soggy and ridiculously delish. And, yes, order the clam fritters for an app!

22 Chesterfield Rd, East Lyme

Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock

Captain Scott's Lobster Dock is a no-frills eatery serving up lightly buttered chunks of fresh lobster in a classic New England style toasted bun. Wedged between the train tracks and a marina, this popular spot has plenty of parking and picnic tables. A full menu of fried shore specialties, too, plus Gifford's ice cream. BYOB.

80 Hamilton Street, New London

The Treehouse

Guilford Lobster Pound

A simple deck lined with picnic tables and views of the Sound and Salt Island make the backdrop for this classic roll: a grilled and buttered hot dog roll, stuffed with sweet, juicy meat. It's a happy alternative on a lovely day to lunching on the Guilford Green, as it's just down Whitfield Street.

505 A Whitfield Street, Guilford

guilfordlobsterpound.com

Westbrook Lobster (in Clinton!)

Westbrook Lobster’s lobster roll is served on the usual toasted bun with hot buttered lobster and you can sub onion rings for the basket of fries (or get BOTH for $1 extra like I did!). An extensive selection of nonseafood items and a happening bar scene make this is a good choice for families, picky eaters, and cocktail hour, too.

346 E Main Street, Clinton www.westbrooklobster.com

In the treetops above Oyster Club, you can munch a perfect roll, crispy fries, smashburgers, raw bar, farm veggies and a curated cocktail selection. This spot always feels like a party! A fave. 13 Water Street Mystic www.oysterclubct.com

Lobster at Home

Atlantic Seafood

I don't cook lobster at home anymore, but we know that out-of-town guests love a lobster roll, so here's my method. I pick up a pound or two of boiled, just-picked-fromthe-shell lobster meat at Atlantic Seafood in Old Saybrook, douse it in melted butter and stuff it in a mini Martin's roll for a super simple summertime snack. atlanticseafoodmarket.com

Thimble Island Lobster Bakes

Another entertaining option is even easier. Ring Thimble Island Lobster Bakes, and they'll arrive in the Lobstermobile, ready to serve up lobster rolls or an entire Shore Dinner (steamers, lobsters, chowder, corn, and salad) for as few as eight, or up to 200 guests. 203-687-6441

thimbleislandslobsterbakes.com

Flanders Fish Market

This family run favorite has been clambaking since 1983. They’ll show up at the beach, pool, or backyard with their clambake wagon to get your clams, lobsters, and all the trimmings underway - for big events and intimate gatherings. flandersfish.com

Ice Cream

From small batch craft makers to nostalgic roadside stands, there’s no shortage of frozen treats on the Shoreline!

13
Salem Valley Farms

Salem Valley Farms

Serving homemade ice cream from the window of their big red barn since the 1980’s, you’ll find 80 flavors from cherry vanilla to cotton candy. Wind along route 82 to this sweet country spot. Cash-only but ATM on site.

20 Darling Road, Salem salemvalleyfarmsicecream.com

Hallmark Drive In

It’s a family tradition (for us and many, many others) to stop at Hallmark for a cone after a day at the beach. Over 30 small-batch, delicious flavors are offered, and even the regular size is mammoth. If it’s close enough to dinnertime, we order cheeseburgers with spicy curly fries and grab a picnic table overlooking the sound. A summertime classic.

113 Shore Road, Old Lyme hallmarkdrivein.com

Scoops

Don’t be thrown off by the gas station attached to this ice cream shop. It’s an easy stop for a big variety of flavors. Order from the window or line up inside the tidy, traditional shop. We go for milkshakes and smoothies but the kids go crazy for cones, ice cream sandwiches and soft serve.

55 Main Street, Centerbrook facebook.com/ScoopsOfCenterbrook/

3 Girls Vegan Soft Serve

This is a summer staple for us: A tasty, vanilla/chocolate swirl, oat milk, softserve ice cream cone (with or without a cherry-dipped top!) from 3 Girls Vegan. Head to their downtown Guilford bakery for these sweet summery treats (plus ice cream sandwiches, shakes, cakes & more).

Bakery: 23 Water Street, Guilford. Main shop full of vegan cuisine: 645 Boston Post Road, Guilford threegirlsvegandowntown.com

Sweet Luna’s

Sweet Tooth’s of all ages adore this colorful place. Help yourself to ten rotating flavors of froyo, sorbet and gelato and over 30 varieties of toppings from granola to Skittles. Grab a bubble tea or an Ashlawn cold brew while you’re there.

139 Main Street, Old Saybrook sweetlunas.com

Old Lyme Ice Cream Shoppe

Once a year, on my birthday, I have an ice cream sundae for lunch. And I always get it at the Old Lyme Ice Cream Shoppe: chocolate ice cream, dripping with hot fudge and piled with whipped cream. Something about their homemade chocolate reminds me of my youth and trips to Bailey’s in Harvard Square. It’s not exact, but the flavor is close enough. I’ve tried to order other flavors here (yes, the seasonal native peach is NOT to be missed), but chocolate. That’s the one. 34 Lyme Street Old Lyme, oldlymeicecreamshoppe.com

Honeycone Craft Ice Cream

This mother/daughter duo translated their affinity for/expertise in fine food and wine to this wildly popular ice cream shop. The ice cream (flavors from Chocolate Milk to Garam Masala), sprinkles, butterscotch, marshmallows, and cones are all carefully crafted inhouse with ingredients that are sourced locally and/or sustainably and in support of small business.

Cocotte at The James Pharmacy

Chef and owner Jeffrey DeFrancesco (a graduate of the French Culinary Institute) and his Parisian wife Isabelle have transformed the old James Pharmacy into a quintessential French bakery and cafe. You’ll find all manner of delicacies here including artisanal gelato crafted in house in the genuine Italian tradition. Flavors rotate but you can’t go wrong but if you see Salted Caramel Chocolate on the menu, please try.

Noah’s at 63 Main

Carlson’s in Essex had a quick transformation into Noah’s at 63 Main, brought to you by the team behind Eli Cannon’s in Middletown, and we think this iteration is here to stay. The menu is wellpriced and accessible, driven by classic American favorites like burgers, tacos, clam chowder, a bevy of salads, raw bar, and Eli’s famous chicken wings. There’s plenty going for this spot besides its designer dining room: the bar has arguably the best view of the CT River (and a slew of creative cocktails) plus a row of high tops on the porch with that very same vista.Reservations recommended. 63 Main St, Essex noahs63main.com

Farm Stands

Before there were Farmers’ Markets in every town on the Shoreline, we shopped the farm stands for our produce and pies. Despite the availability of farm-fresh food everywhere, we have some favorite farm stands that we scurry to for specific goodies:

43

Stone Acres Farm

This historic 63-acre working farm celebrates natural farming, sustainable food, culinary education, and the preservation of open space. They also supply the famed Oyster Club and Engine Room in Mystic. Check the website for farm dinners, educational programs, and other events.

393 North Main Street, Stonington

Check the website for farm dinners, educational programs and other events: stoneacresfarm.com

Four Mile River Farm

Four Mile is famous for its burgers that turn up on many fine restaurant menus But there’s lots more than burgers at the farmstand. You’ll find every cut of beef imaginable from sirloin strips to steak tips, plus nitrate free hot dogs and kielbasa. Get your entire dinner here: a refrigerated case is stocked with Four Root Farm’s salad mix, arugula and herbs, and grab some chèvre from Sweet Pea Farm. Paleo peeps can stock up on bone broth, too. 124 Four Mile River Road, Old Lyme fourmileriverfarm.com

Lakeside Feed

You might come here as much for an ice cream cone as for a rack of ribs or a carton of fava beans, but this is a fun place to hit for the whole family. From the llamas out front to the baby chicks in the feed store, the tots will love a trip here. Once you get past the tubs of ice cream, you’ll find a freezer case full of farm meats, from hot and sweet Italian sausage to bacon, burgers, stew meat and steaks. 31 Lake Drive, Guilford

Scott’s Farm Store

We head here for tomatoes and corn virtually every week (and a fat chunk of cheddar cheese and some Liuzzi’s burrata), but it’s also a great stop for gardeners. Open everyday. Find Scott’s on facebook: Open everyday.

44

Bishop’s Orchards

For many of us, Bishop’s is where we go, not only for a stellar selection of produce, but for everyday groceries. I always pick up a few jars of their unsweetened applesauce (just like homemade), and some turkey pot pies for the freezer. But this time of year is a don’t miss for fruit pie. And what we love about Bishop’s is you can buy a half. I’m a huge fan of the Fruit of the Farm with NO added sugar. It’s summer pie perfection, stuffed with apples, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, it’s not too sweet with a lovely crumbly crust. And if you’ve only bought a half, that’s all you’ll eat. 1355

Boston Post Road, Guilford bishopsorchards.com

Sankow’s Beaver Brook

Head a mile up Beaver Brook Road in Lyme and you’ll happen upon an old farmhouse with a faded sign out front. Head out back to the farm store to find refrigerated and freezer cases full of Sankow’s award-winning cow and goat cheeses, frozen goodies like lamb and bean chili, bolognese sauce, and stacks of Shepherd’s Pie. Don’t leave without a container or two of their pesto. It’s the BEST. Next door is a shop full of wool products, sweaters and the cutest socks.

139 Beaver Brook Road, Lyme beaverbrookfarm.com

Deep Hollow Farm

This organic, no-till farm is churning out perfectly lined rows of beets, kale and heirloom tomatoes and everything in between. The farmhouse store is tucked away near the end of Deep Hollow Road and open Saturday mornings from 9-12.

46 Deep Hollow Road, Chester deephollowfarmct.com

White Gate Farm

This is the stand for the aesthete. This famous organic farm features meticulously displayed fresh veggies and a variety of delicacies made in the Farm Kitchen. I never leave without a bag or two of gluten-free breakfast cookies (stash them in the freezer, they keep well and don’t need defrosting), some hummus, and perhaps the weekly soup. Read about White Gate’s Farm Fest Saturdays here. 83 Upper Pattagansett Road, East Lyme whitegatefarm.net

Scott’s Yankee Farmer

We head here for the best hot apple cider donuts on weekends, but that’s definitely not all…their own hot house tomatoes start early, and you’ll find tons of freshly picked berries and veggies. Check the blackboard for pick your own dates. 436 Boston Post Road, East Lyme

scottsyankeefarmer.net

Staehly’s

Folks head here for hanging baskets, veggies, Grannie’s pies and fruit wines, but we like the rows of mason jars filled with all manner of tempting treats. The spiced peaches make a handy dessert, just pile a few over a bowl of vanilla ice cream. Bread and butter pickles are a staple in our house, and who could resist a jar of old fashioned pickled beet balls? A stash of these in your pantry make fantastic hostess gifts.

46

Barberry Hill Farm

Barberry is a regular stop on our jaunts up and down the Shoreline for a bunch of fresh flowers and a bag of lumpy heirloom tomatoes. This 100 year old family farm practices sustainable farming methods and grows their crops without the use of pesticides and fungicides. The roadside stand, on the Post Road between Madison and Guilford, is always a feast for the eyes (and instagram worthy!).

Cold Spring Farm

It’s worth a drive from wherever you are to visit this sprawling farm on the edge of Lake Hayward in Colchester. The farmstand is easy to spot and open daily from dawn til dusk. Fill up on freshly harvested produce and locally made baked goods. The fridges and freezers are stocked with organic, grass-fed meats from the farm, plus local cheese and milk. 46 Lake Hayward Town Road, Colchester coldspringfarmct.com

Chris’ Dog House

I'm the girl at the barbecue, happily downing a hot dog while the rest are eating steak. It's my summer go-to and I can't pass by Chris's stand in Deep River without a full stop. Little House Brewing Co.

We have a soft spot for this Chester brewery, as co-owner Lisle Schaeffer was one of our favorite interns many years ago! But that’s not the only reason: a combo of smarts, humor, and an ever-changing menu of craft beer keeps this place hopping. Trivia, taco truck, pop-up shop, beer and ice cream flights, and more fun events coming up all summer long. 16 Main Street, Chester littlehousebrewing.com

Gourmet Galley At Home

We’ve become extremely fond of Gourmet Galley At Home at the new Norton property in Niantic, which also houses Azalea, Pearls and Plaid, and Sift’s award-winning bakery (you can make an afternoon of it!). Cocktails in the afternoon and outdoor seating overlooking Niantic Bay, too. 185 Main Street, Niantic ggathome.com

Moon Shots

You don’t need to be “cleansing” to head to Moon Shots in Madison. Yes, their fresh-pressed juices are the best, but for me, it’s all about the gluten-free waffles! Cocktails and spirits without a drop of booze? Yup! Sometimes in summer, we just need a break, and we take to sipping a refreshing AF cocktail. My current favorite is Wilfred’s Bitter Orange with a splash of seltzer, just like an Aperol Spritz without the buzz or calories. Shop online at betterrhodes.com

Long River Local

A breakfast sandwich is as CT as it gets, right up there with lobster rolls and pizza. We’ve got a few favorites, but our latest go-to is Long River Local in Old Lyme. Theirs is an elevated version with their own farm fresh eggs, applewood smoked bacon (and plenty of it), and cheddar cheese on a toasted and squishy Cuban roll. Ashlawn Farm coffee, espresso drinks, plus lunch and dinner take-out and picnic fixings. Outdoor seating. 96 Halls Road, Old Lyme longriverlocal.com

Duby’s Bagels

Bagels, lox, and whitefish salad in Old Saybrook? Yes, please! Duby’s bagels are the real deal and remind me of the Sundays of my youth when my grandfather took me along to buy brunch fixings. Bagels back then were not the behemoths they are nowadays, but a normal size for a normal stomach. And Duby’s are, too, with a crispy crust and delightfully chewy interior in all the essential flavors (even pumpernickel and salt!).
