Saturday Lunch at El Pulpo Tapas Bar, Middletown

If you’ve been reading the E List for long enough, you know my obsession with small plates and miniature food (my latest craze are Trader’s Joe’s teeny, tiny ice cream cones!). It may well have started in the eighties when Tapas became a thing. So much more interesting to enjoy a variety of tastes at a meal versus one big plate.

I’m still a big fan of Spanish food and was thrilled to have lunch at El Pulpo Tapas Bar last week. Although slightly stymied by the extensive menu (four versions of paella!), we finally settled on a tower of shaved Brussels sprouts tossed with truffles, hot and crispy beef empanadas in yummy guacamole, and spicy shrimp floating in a puddle of garlicky olive oil (and a basket of crusty bread for dipping)!

The menu meanders into neighboring countries, but no matter, there’s plenty of authentic Mediterranean fare here to rev your taste buds. The Family Dinner menu piqued my interest, a prix fixe of salad, two appetizers, and an entree for a ridiculous $35 for two (or $60 for four), and we’ll be back for that.

You’ll find a simple room with white tablecloths and black chairs, and a large outdoor patio for sunny days (or if you’re not ready for indoor dining) plus Happy Hour specials, cheerful and attentive service, and a full bar.
