I find it increasingly difficult to get my mind around the horror of recent international events. No sooner do I change my Facebook profile to reflect that I stand in solidarity with France, then folks start posting that it’s ridiculous to switch your photo when brutality is happening all over the world. I agree. But I also think that, at least for me, Facebook is not a place for posting my politics for the world to see. Ditto minor daily grievances and complaints. Changing my photo is expressing that I am aware (and saddened). For me Facebook is a happy place; a chance to browse photos of my kid, my friends' kids, and relatives I rarely see. That’s what I use it for. It is social media after all. Thoughts? I’d love to hear them. erica@the-e-list.com

We sent e-list contributor Amanda Bloom up to the Goodspeed to check out their holiday show:
A Wonderful Life, Goodspeed Opera House,
East Haddam
It’s sacrilegious I know, but I’ve never seen the Christmas classic It’s A Wonderful Life. So when I saw A Wonderful Life, the musical adapted from the film at Goodspeed Opera House, I had no black and white masterpiece to compare it to. I have a feeling it made my journey to Bedford Falls all the more magical.

Duke Lafoon effortlessly embodies bighearted George Bailey, whose generosity leads his housing business into debt, and Kirsten Scott, her voice...

House Portraits by Paloma's Nest
Paloma’s Nest, a local maker of hand-crafted personalized presents in porcelain and wood (the sweetest ceramic ornaments and tiny wedding bowls) has a-one-of-a-kind new offering just in time for the holidays. If you’ve been struggling over the perfect gift for that impossible-to-buy-for friend or relation, this could be your answer: a pen and ink house portrait. Email them a few shots of the home and voila, a few weeks later you’ll receive a hand-drawn rendering on a custom, archival 11 x 14 white matte. Also, it's a thoughtful gift for someone moving into or out of a home (realtors take note). Peruse their website for all kinds of holiday inspiration and if you’re interested in a home portrait, orders must be received by December 4th for Christmas Eve delivery.

Dinner and Demos at White Gate Farm, East Lyme
We arrived a teeny bit late to the cooking demonstration at White Gate Farm, so I was not forewarned when I grabbed a tortilla chip and dipped it into the bright green salsa. Whammo! Hot! And not that slow deceiving afterburn either, just full-on sear. I shouldn’t have been surprised. We were here for an authentic Mexican meal, prepared by the chef from Brooklyn Taco, after all. Having no recourse for my poor mouth, I decided the best idea was to pay strict attention to the demonstration and try to forget about it. Here’s what I love about cooking classes: those well-trained chefs make everything look easy and FAST. I came home thinking it would be a snap to mix up balls of cornmeal, fry them up on the stove and Voila...
